This week was another one of less work than usual due to submission dates coming up. However I did manage to go and complete the level select screen for now. I think my focus in these next weeks will be polishing and adding in more features that aren't my most favourite things. That way when I have a final platform I'm happy with I can then give myself more work by creating more levels.
For reference my old level select screen looked like this:
However I am not sure on whether or not I will add more characters, and also want to separate the decisions into their own screens and so I ditched the character wheel for now. I then took the level carousel and sized it up to fit the screen. I then took images of each level with a unique look. When developing I realised one of the debug tools being the overdraw view gives the scene a look like its a hologram and that fits perfectly with my theme. And so by turning off certain objects to get my desired look I took photos and then moved them into Photoshop to make each a unique colour theme and the final turn out looks great:
Once this was done I added text to each image slide and gave them all titles and quick blurbs to make the player feel excited to race them. It also gave me an opportunity to add more direct world building into my game rather than it all being through the level itself.
I then made a quick gradient sprite for the text to sit upon for easier readability and used some general button arrow sprites. This is what the set up looks like out of play view:
I think the menu is simple and effective. After that I decided to listen to my past self and go back and fix the crowd sprites. I wanted to add more colour and also make the crowd look more generic as to allow the players imagination to decide who is really viewing these races.
I took a page out of Rocket League's book and went for little egg shaped crowds:
Then it was as simple as swapping out the old crowds for 2d sprite textures and remaking the simple bobbing animation. I also liked how the crowd looked being really bright and so instead of changing their material to fit into the dark and gloomy world I added lights into the stands, making the crowd feel more energetic and alive.
I think this helped a lot with one of the main things I want to change across the game and that is making the world feel less stationary and more vibrant and lived in.
As always here is a play through of these new changes:
*I have just seen the backside of the stands, fix on the way.
