Capstone Project: Reflection

Overall I am very pleased with my final project 'Aero Rush' and proud of what I have accomplished in only a year. It was the brainchild of mine that all stemmed from a single model of the original hover jet, and led me to building a diverse and rich universe that I greatly enjoyed crafting.

I think that this project alone has taught me so much in all aspects of Game Design. It has pushed me to learn more about C# coding, which was never my strong suit. It has made me feel a lot more comfortable with the engine and I now feel confident in my abilities to single-handedly produce to a video game within Unity. It was a journey and looking back upon the first prototype and seeing how wildly different (and bad) it was is rewarding to see.

My decision to choose the PS2 low poly style also let me explore stylized asset creation, and further pushed my modelling and texturing skills. This is as the low poly count forced me to effectively use every edge, face, and vertices. On the texturing side, being restricted to only a base colour map led to me learning a lot about how to display shading, light emission, texture, and metallicness all through colour and pattern.

I also learned so much about myself and how to work optimally throughout this year. It taught me to pace myself to avoid burnout, but also make sure to do something once a day. Even if it was a small addition to the overall project, they all added up by the end of the year and made my life less stressful in the final weeks. "Mountains are made of dust" rung true. I'm happy that I chose to create something that I was passionate as getting up in the early morning and working hard till the sun went down was made slightly easier knowing I was creating something I liked and would be proud to show to others.

By the end of the year I achieved almost everything I wanted to, and the few things I cut weren't anything significant or fills me with regret. If I had had more time I would have implemented a customisation option for the main player's vehicle. However I still think I achieved everything I wanted and am excited to have made a (small) full game myself.

I plan to release it on itch.io for free so that everyone can play my creation. For now I will leave 'Aero Rush' at that but I could see myself revisiting this amazing project in the future after some well deserved time off.
